A group representing more than 20 federal employee unions sent a letter to Congress Monday asking lawmakers to leave worker pay and benefits out of any deficit reduction deal, GovExec reports.The Federal-Postal Coalition claims the pay freeze on federal employees has provided $60 billion in budget savings for fiscal years 2011 and 2012.
An additional $28 billion in savings will be come from the freeze extension through March 2013, Eric Katz writes.
According to the report, federal workers also contributed $15 billion to the budget in 2011 when the contribution rate toward retirement pensions went up 2.3 percent for new employees.
