House OKs STEM Immigration Bill, Senate Not Likely to Consider

1 min read

The House approved legislation Friday to increase the number of visas issued to foreign-born graduates of U.S. universities with advanced technical degrees, The Hill newspaper reports.

However, Pete Kasperowicz writes the Senate is unlikely to consider the STEM Jobs Act and the White House has already signaled its opposition to the bill.

Close to two dozen Democrats joined Republicans in approving the measure by a 245-139 vote, according to the report.

According to National Journal, the bill would eliminate the Diversity Visa Program and assign up to 55,000 green cards per year to foreign students who hold a doctorate or master’s degree in the science, technology, engineering and math fields.
