NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Monday the alliance is on track to meet its 2014 deadline for withdrawing troops from Afghanistan, American Forces Press Service reports.

Claudette Roulo writes Rasmussen also said nearly 90 percent of training activities in the country are conducted by Afghan security forces.

Rasmussen made the remarks in an interview with the Pentagon Channel, according to the report.

Afghan forces are also leading close to 80 percent of all security operations in the country, he said.

The NATO Response Force, which also acts as a framework for training and exercises, will have a U.S. brigade unit rotating around Europe to participate in the force’s activities, he said.

According to Roulo’s account of the interview, Rasmussen said the force will become more important as Afghan operations wind down.
