Former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) is the likely nominee to succeed Leon Panetta as defense secretary, Bloomberg News reports on its Twitter feed.

Citing sources, Bloomberg reports President Barack Obama invited Hagel to White House on Dec. 4 to discuss the position.

According to Reuters, Obama met with him to discuss other national security positions as well but did not have a decision on where Hagel would serve.

Obama is also selecting a nominee to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, Matt Spetalnick writes.

That post could be filled by either Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) or Susan Rice, U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

Spetalnick writes Kerry’s name has also come up for the defense post.
