U.S. Special Operations Commander Adm. William McRaven wants to have more control over commandos once they are outside of the U.S. and in deployed theaters, Defense News reports.

Garry Reid, principal deputy assistant defense secretary for special operations and low-intensity conflict, told an audience at the Defense Strategies Institute last week McRaven said the services want to take on more in security force assistance.

Army Lt. Gen. John Mulholland, deputy commander at SoCom, told the Alexandria, Va. seminar McRaven wants to communicate with other theater special operations commanders and be able to move forces worldwide.

SoCom has a function for training and equipping special operations forces but not any formal authority to do the same with TSOCs or theater assigned forces, the report said.
