1 min read

ObamaSigningPresident Barack Obama signed into law Wednesday the fiscal year 2013 defense authorization bill, which allocates $633 billion in spending, The Hill newspaper reports.

Jeremy Herb and Alicia Cohn write the bill include portions Obama objected to, including a block on funds for the Medium Extended Air Defense System and blocking Tricare fee increases.

The bill includes plans to study potential sites on the East Coast for a new missile defense shield, according to the report.

According to Defense News, the bill also gives the Pentagon authority to give the multi-year procurement designation to the CH-47 helicopter, Navy DDG-51 destroyer and V-22 tiltrotor programs.

John Bennett writes the bill’s total funding is $1.7 billion more than the White House’s request.

A joint House-Senate conference committee reached a deal on the defense bill in mid-December after both chambers passed different versions of it earlier in 2012.
