Reports: Pentagon Cutting 8 Furlough Days

1 min read

PentagonThe Defense Department now plans to furlough its civilian workers for 14 days during the rest of the current fiscal year, eight less than the 22 days it originally set aside, Bloomberg reports.

David Lerman reports Congress provided the Pentagon $10 billion more operations and maintenance funding and spending flexibility in a new defense appropriations bill.

Furloughs will not start until June, Lerman reports, citing a U.S. official.

According to Reuters, the Pentagon originally planned to send furlough notices to employees last week but delayed the notices after Congress passed the continuing resolution.

Reuters reports the Pentagon has not given a number of how many workers will be furloughed, but David Alexander writes officials estimate nearly 80 percent of the department’s 800,000 civilians could be furloughed.
