Fed Employees Required to Buy Insurance Through Health Exchanges Under New Bill

ACAThe House Ways and Means Committee has proposed legislation seeking to require all federal employees to apply for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act-mandated insurance exchanges, the Federal Daily reported Monday.

The staff of the Federal Daily said under H.R. 1780, all federal employees, including the president, vice president and cabinet members should purchase coverage via marketplaces, the report said citing an article from The Hill.

Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) and four other GOP leaders introduced the measure on April 26.

“If the ObamaCare exchanges are good enough for the hardworking Americans and small businesses the law claims to help, then they should be good enough for the president, vice president, Congress, and federal employees,” Camp spokeswoman Sarah Swinehart said in a statement.

According to the report, the new bill arose from discussions that sought to exempt lawmakers and their staff from the requirement.
