Report: The Federal Cyber Workforce is Aging

1 min read

A report has just come out detailing the advanced age of the majority of cyber workers in the U.S. Federal government.

The
was released on Wednesday which found that nearly 80 percent of cybersecurity employees are over the age of 40, according to a Nextgov article.

The report said that a third of federal cyber workers will be eligible to retire in the next 3-5 years and only five percent are 30 year old or younger.

“While specific factors may be influencing the average age of a department or agency’s workforce, this data indicates potential risk to the current and future pipeline of cybersecurity professionals,” the report says.

“An aging cybersecurity professional population could lead to a manpower shortage in the federal cybersecurity field.”

The study also found that the majority of cyber workers have spent most of their careers in the federal government, although not specifically in the field of cybersecurity.
