us armyThe U.S. Army will temporarily lay off more than 500 civilian employees at Fort Meade, Md. to address government-wide budget cuts, according to a Baltimore Sun article published Wednesday.

Matthew Hay Brown writes the office heads will notify 425 garrison employees by June 4 and 113 commissary workers by June 5 about the planned furlough

The furlough will begin July 8 and run until September 30 and will occur one day per week.

Joseph Jeu, director and CEO of the Defense Commissary Agency, said the furlough would cut 20 percent from the employees’ pay and that Monday of each week would be the furlough day.

The temporary layoff is intended to help the Defense Department respond to the sequester, according to the Baltimore Sun article.

Brown writes the layoffs will not affect military personnel.

Fort Meade employs 39,654 civilian workers and 12,737 service members which makes it the biggest employer in Md., according to the Baltimore Sun.

The more than 100 tenant government organizations will deliver their own furlough notices individually going forward.
