Pentagon Revamps ‘Bunker Buster’ to Deter Iran Nuclear Threat

1 min read

PentagonThe U.S. Defense Department has overhauled the “bunker buster” bomb meant to attack Iran’s nuclear facility in case peace negotiations fail, the Wall Street Journal reported Thursday.

Adam Entous and Julian Barnes write the Pentagon has enhanced the burrowing capability and improved the precision technology of the 30,000-pound massive ordnance penetrator to enable the bomb to breach Iran’s defense systems and strike the Fordow underground nuclear enrichment site near Qom City.

Pentagon aims for the improvements to counter Iran’s nuclear threats and prompt the country to withdraw nuclear efforts, the report said.

Diplomats told the WSJ that a video of the previous version of the bomb was shown to Israeli military officials and new enhancements to the weapon were explained.

The video clip showed the bomb infiltrating the ground and denoting nuclear weapons, according to WSJ.

“Hopefully we never have to use it,” said a senior U.S. official.

“But if we had to, it would work,” they added.
