Almost 50,000 National Guard members nationwide are among the 650,000 military civilian employees who began taking unpaid furlough days this week as a result of the sequestration, USA Today reported Thursday.
Gregg Zoroya writes that full-time National Guard soldiers and airmen who hold “dual-status military technicians” designation can be subject to furloughs under the law.
“These soldiers and Airmen perform day-to-day administrative, logistical and maintenance functions,” said Gus Hargett, a retired Army general and president of the National Guard Association of the United States.
“The Pentagon exempted in the name of military readiness all other uniformed personnel,” he added.
Zoroya reports the House has introduced legislation aimed to prevent furloughs for National Guard personnel.
