john kerryU.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced Israel and Palestine are preparing to begin peace negotiations over the territorial and political dispute that has been ongoing for decades, Reuters reported Saturday.

Arshad Mohammed writes Kerry expects Israeli Cabinet minister Tzipi Livni and Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat to arrive in Washington, D.C. this week to mark the start of peace talks.

Israeli and Palestinian officials told Reuters the discussions could take several months as both sides seek an extensive and concrete process.

Kerry added the discussion is far from reaching a final accord and will be held privately.

Mohammed writes peace talks between Israel and Palestine last occurred in 2010 concerning Israel’s presence in the West Bank and East Jerusalem which are major points of contention between the opposing sides.
