Mike Sheehan was set to step down as assistant defense secretary for special operations and low intensity conflict as of June 30, Fedscoop reports.

Cory Bennett writes Sheehan’s resignation was announced by Jim Miller, defense undersecretary for policy, during a town-hall meeting and his successor has not been named.

Sheehan assumed the post in 2011 and provided advice to the defense secretary on special operations policy and led humanitarian assistance and anti-drugs initiatives.

He also served on the National Security Council during the George W. Bush and Bill Clinton administrations and coordinated counterterrorism activities for the State Department in a prior role.
