Martin Dempsey has received Senate confirmation to serve a second term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Reuters reported Thursday.

According to Thomas Ferraro and Susan Cornwell’s report, the confirmation came through after Sen. John McCain lifted his threat to block the White House nomination.

Reuters noted that McCain had been critical of the Army general’s assessment of U.S. involvement in the civil war in Syria but said last week that he would not stand in the way of a Senate vote.

Dempsey had said the U.S. could establish no-fly zones and conduct limited attacks on military targets in Syria if needed.

He added that that these would be an act of warand could cost billions of dollars.
