John Kerry Seeks ‘Urgent’ Peace Talks on Syria

1 min read

John KerryState Secretary John Kerry has urged the international community to convene a peace conference on a new Syria at the earliest possible time, Reuters reported Monday.

Lesley Wroughton writes Kerry made the call following a meeting with United Nations special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi in London this week.

“We believe that (Syrian) President (Bashar al-)Assad has lost the legitimacy necessary to be a cohesive force that could bring people together,” Kerry told reporters after holding talks with Brahimi.

“There has to be a transition government in Syria to permit the possibility of peace.”
