1 min read

PentagonThe Defense Department has restored more than 300,000 furloughed civilian employees following the passage of a military pay bill, The Hill newspaper reported Monday.

Jeremy Herb and Erik Wasson write only a few of the nearly 750,000 civilian defense workers will stay on furlough and the military’s service members will continue to be protected from the government shutdown.

The return of most civilian employees is mandated by the newly-passed Pay Our Military Act, which requires prompt paychecks for civilian and military personnel, according to the report.

U.S. Navy spokeswoman Lt. Caroline Hutchinson told The Hill nearly 70,000 Navy employees have been called back while less than 1,000 remain furloughed.

Herb and Wasson write approximately 154,000 U.S. Army and 104,000 U.S. Air Force civilian workers have also returned to their jobs and defense contractors have canceled their plan to furlough workers.

Robert Hale, Pentagon comptroller, said public affairs and legislative affairs workers as well as audit workers remain furloughed.

The intelligence community not under the Defense Department’s jurisdiction also remains furloughed, according to The Hill article.
