Kevin CharestThe Department of Health and Human Services and the Health Information Trust Alliance will hold a simulated exercise in March to assess healthcare companies’ level of preparedness for cyber attacks, NextGov reported Monday.

Aliya Sternstein writes the CyberRX drill will be conducted in order for health IT departments to pinpoint areas that may need improvement and fine-tune data security programs.

“Our goal for the exercises is to identify additional ways that we can help the industry be better prepared for and better able to respond to cyberattacks,” said Kevin Charest, HHS’ chief information security officer, according to the report.

Ninety-four percent of hospitals that responded to a Ponemon Institute survey in 2012 reported encountering at least one data breach in the past two years, Sternstein writes.
