Veterans Affairs Department logoThe Veterans Affairs Department is processing the disability claims of former military service members using a new tool that is intended to help minimize backlogs, Federal News Radio reported Friday.

Jared Serbu writes VA claims personnel are using the Health Artifact and Image Management system, which went online in January, to view the Defense Department‘s electronic medical records of veterans that left the service after Jan. 1

Maj. Gen. Richard Thomas, director of healthcare operations at the Defense Health Agency, told a House panel that the VA is able to access files such as scanned paper documents and electronic data from the DoD’s medical record system.

“When a separated service member or veteran files a claim, a VBA claims adjudicator then establishes a claim in the Veterans Benefit Management System,” Thomas told the House Veterans Affairs Committee during a Wednesday hearing.
