Kathleen_Frisbee_Head_ShotThe Department of Veterans Affairs plans to form regulations for accessing patient data from mobile applications and health monitoring devices, FCW reported Monday.

Adam Mazmanian writes that Kathleen Frisbee, co-director for connected health at VA’s Office of Information and Analytics, disclosed the plan in a keynote speech at the annual Government Information Technology Executive Council forum in Baltimore.

“Everything we’re doing in mobile has to converge with the new electronic health records that VA is building,” Frisbee said, according to FCW.

The VA has unveiled a Family Caregiver Suite of apps that are intended to help veterans and their caregivers to monitor PTSD symptoms, pain and drug prescriptions.

FCW reports that the agency is also testing a messaging system for healthcare providers to remind patients about medications and clinical protocols.

Va officials want to develop rules on when providers should access patient-generated data and how to share information during appointments at VA clinics and other facilities, according to Mazmanian’s article.
