A Senate committee is working to expand the Department of Homeland Security’s authority to hire for its cyber operations, Federal News Radio reported Friday.

Jason Miller writes the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee is scheduled to deliberate on the proposed legislation on Wednesday.

“The folks at NSA have more tools and resources to attract top talent, we want to make sure Homeland Security has similar kinds of abilities,” said Committee Chairman Tom Carper (D-Del.), according to the report.

“My hope is that we will be able to put the finishing touches on a draft bill and offer it at our markup next week and move it along.”

Lawmakers passed the Homeland Security Cybersecurity Boots-on-the-Ground Act in December as part of efforts to broaden DHS’ mandate to recruit cyber employees, according to the report.

Miller writes the department has been implementing the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education along with the Defense Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence in order to train those workers.

Sen. Carper is also collaborating with Committee Ranking Member Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) to amend the Federal Information Security Management Act, the station reports.
