CyberCrimeKeyboardCyberattacks against federal agencies in 2013 have increased by 32 percent from the previous year, Washington Business Journal reported Friday.

Citing figures from Department of Homeland Security’s Computer Emergency Readiness Team, Jill Aitoro writes federal agencies reported 46,160 cyber incidents last year compared to 33,000 and 35,000 from 2010 to 2012.

“Cyber-based attacks on federal systems have become not only more numerous and diverse but also more damaging and disruptive,” said Gregory Wilshusen, director of information security issues at GAO.

A 2012 Government Accountability Office report indicated that agencies failed to respond to cyber threats 65 percent of the time and that six agencies fell short of federal requirements in developing policies and procedures for cyber incident response operations, the Business Journal reports.
