The threat posed by global terrorist groups linked to Al Qaeda remains a top national security focus for the U.S. government, according to Michael Vickers, defense undersecretary for intelligence, Breaking Defense reported Tuesday.

Colin Clark writes that Vickers discussed key intelligence and security issues at a military strategy forum Tuesday held at the Center for Strategic and International Studies headquarters in Washington.

Vickers told his audience that the Syrian civil war, Ukraine-Russian conflict, cyber attacks, weapons of mass destruction and China’s maritime disputes also pose challenges to international peace, Clark reports.

“These are highly asymmetric challenges,” he added.

“As senior intelligence officials, we haven’t seen this range of challenges on an administration’s plate in our careers.”
