Julian Castro was confirmed by a 71-26 Senate vote Wednesday to succeed Shaun Donovan as secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Reuters reported Wednesday.
Elvina Nawaguna writes that Castro will step down as mayor of San Antonio as soon as the city council can find a successor.
He has implemented housing and downtown revitalization programs in the Texas city and vowed to support housing finance reforms as HUD secretary.
“We will allow more responsible Americans to achieve the dream of home ownership,” he told a press conference.
“Julian has lived the American Dream in his own life, and I’m confident he will help Americans across our country seize their own piece of that dream for themselves and their children,” President Barack Obama said, according to Reuters.
Castro told lawmakers during his nomination hearing last month that he would also aim to help the Federal Housing Administration achieve its goal of staying financially secure while helping low-income borrowers.
