Stephen Welby, deputy assistant secretary for systems engineering at the Defense Department, has been nominated to serve as DoD’s research and engineering assistant secretary.
President Barack Obama announced Welbyâs nomination on Wednesday.
Welby is currently the principal systems engineering adviser to the defense secretary, with responsibility in pre-acquisition development planning, engineering support, development and manufacturing, independent review, technical risk assessment and engineering analysis.
He also serves as the defense standardization executive and leads the DoDâs acquisition professionals in the engineering and production, quality and manufacturing workforce.
The 26-year government and industry veteran previously held senior leadership roles at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency.
