Defense Secretary Ashton Carter has released a new strategic plan for the Defense Department to secure cyberspace operations and strengthen cybersecurity of weapon systems, the Washington Business Journal reported Thursday.

Jill Aitoro writes the 42-page cyber strategy document calls for the agency to include security standards in military technology acquisition programs.

DoD also wants to launch programs to encourage more companies to share threat intelligence as well as to educate agency personnel and contractors about digital threats, according to Aitoro.

The Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Intelligence will consider whether to implement additional guidelines on how companies should protect data networks that support defense customers, the report said.

Ellen Nakashima wrote in the Washington Post that defense officials said the new framework is part of DoD’s efforts to integrate cyber weapons into military contingency plans.

The plan also states that the agency should collaborate with foreign allies to carry out missions in cyberspace, according to Nakashima.

A senior defense official told the newspaper DoD will use offensive cyber tools to respond to attacks resulting in a loss of life, property damages and an economic collapse.
