Dr. Ed Felten, professor of computer science and public affairs at Princeton University, has been appointed as the White House’s deputy chief technology officer.

He will work to help develop technical strategies for the federal government to deliver services and engage citizens, according to a Monday blog post by U.S. CTO Megan Smith and Deputy CTO Alexander Macgillivray.

Felten is also the founding director of Princeton University’s center for information technology policy, a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow at the Association for Computing Machinery.

He previously worked at the Federal Trade Commission as its first-ever chief technologist and at the antitrust division of the Justice Department.

He has authored two books and more than 100 publications about technology law and policy.
