Karen DeSalvo to Receive HHS Assistant Secretary for Health Nomination

Karen DeSalvo, national coordinator for health information technology at the Department of Health and Human Services, will be nominated by President Barack Obama to the role of assistant secretary for health at HHS on a full-time basis.

The White House’s announcement posted Wednesday noted that DeSalvo has held the post on an acting basis since October.

She previously worked as the New Orleans health commissioner in Louisiana and senior health policy adviser to Mayor Mitch Landrieu.

DeSalvo practiced internal medicine and was a professor at Tulane University School of Medicine, where she has also served as head of the general medicine and geriatrics sections and worked on community health affairs.

She is a past president of the Louisiana Health Care Quality Forum and the Association of Chiefs and Leaders of General Internal Medicine.
