Veterans Affairs Department logoThe Senate has approved Dr. David Shulkin as undersecretary for health at the Department of Veterans Affairs by a voice vote, the Associated Press reported Tuesday.

President Barack Obama nominated Shulkin, president of the New Jersey-based Morristown Medical Center, in March to lead the department’s Veterans Health Administration.

Law Firm Newswire reports that Shulkin promised to address accountability issues, long wait times for veterans and rising construction costs at the agency.

The VA is in need of “more doctors, more nurses, and greater efficiency from its current systems,” he said during his confirmation hearing before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.
