mobile device managementMaarten Bron, director of innovations at Underwriters Laboratories, has confirmed that UL is in talks with the Obama administration to introduce a certification standard intended to safeguard Internet-connected devices from cyber threats, InformationWeek’s Dark Reading reported Monday.

“What the White House is trying to achieve is to foster collaboration between private and government sectors to come up with these standards,” Bron said.

He noted that the White House is still in the planning phase for creating such standards for Internet of Things-based products, Kelly Jackson Higgins writes.

Bron told Dark Reading that the certification company also plans to introduce its own certification and testing platform for IoT devices.

“For us, cybersecurity and IoT have been on the radar screen for a long time already,” he said.

Higgins reports that UL introduced a cybersecurity unit in 2011 and plans to target industrial controls and health systems for its IoT-focused certification program.
