McCain, Thornberry Call for Review of DoD Reorganization Law

1 min read

PentagonHouse Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry (R-Texas) and Senate counterpart Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) plan to hold congressional hearings to re-examine a 1986 law that established the U.S. military’s current command structure, Defense News reported Tuesday.

Joe Gould writes that Thornberry and McCain called for a review of the Goldwater-Nichols Act as Congress seeks to give military service chiefs more responsibility and accountability over acquisition programs.

The two lawmakers said potential reforms to the military acquisition system will hinge on the passage of the 2016 National Defense Authorization Act, which faces a veto threat from President Obama, the publication reports.

National Defense magazine reports McCain noted he expects the Goldwater-Nichols review to begin after the Obama administration and Republican lawmakers address federal spending issues.

He added the law’s manpower policies must be updated to help the Defense Department to train and equip its personnel to address cybersecurity threats.
