The General Services Administration has kicked off its Economic Catalyst Initiative with a three-city tour as the agency works to align federal construction, leasing and relocation programs with local development efforts.
GSA Administrator Denise Turner Roth went to Cambridge, Massachusetts, Detroit and Charlotte, North Carolina, to discuss the national campaign with several officials and investors in the three cities, the agency said Wednesday.
“By working together with state and local partners, GSA can find opportunities to support a community’s development goals while driving a better deal for taxpayers,” said Roth.
The agency noted it will invest about $70 million to renovate a Detroit-based commercial building and relocate as many as 700 federal workers from different facilities to the site.
GSA is also looking to exchange the Volpe National Transportation Systems Center in Cambridge for construction services in order to help the Transportation Department build a new research hub.
Additionally, the agency began discussions with the Charlotte officials to exchange a federally-owned property in the city for the Jonas courthouse.
