Eric Smith Named Senior Military Assistant to Ashton Carter

U.S. Marine Corps Brig. Gen. Eric Smith, formerly a senior military assistant to the deputy secretary of defense, has been appointed as senior military assistant to Defense Secretary Ashton Carter, Stars and Stripes reported Friday.

Corey Dickstein writes Smith will succeed U.S. Army Lt. Gen. Ron Lewis.

Smith previously served as director of capability development, assistant chief of staff G3, commanding officer of 8th Marine Regiment and director of the fires and maneuver integration division at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command.

He was the division operations officer at the First Marine Division, executive officer of Regimental Combat Team 1 and commanding officer of the 5th Marines 1st Battalion between 2003 and 2006.
