President Donald Trump will remove Rex Tillerson as Secretary of State and nominate Mike Pompeo, the current CIA director, as his replacement.
“Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job!” Trump said in a tweet Tuesday. “Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!”
Haspel is the CIA’s deputy director, the second-highest position at the agency.
Last week, Trump accepted Kim Jong-un’s invitation to meet, which would make him the first sitting U.S. president to do so with a North Korean leader.
