Defense Secretary Leon Panetta
Panetta assumed the top post at the Pentagon July 1 after serving two years as CIA director. The lead item on Panetta’s agenda is cutting $450 billion over the next decade, with possibly $500 billion more in cuts depending on a supercommittee’s ability to set long-term budget strategy.
Petraeus took the helm at the CIA Sept. 6 after a celebrated 37-year Army career. The retired four-star general now wears a different uniform and is tasked with convincing the CIA to share data with other intelligence agencies.
U.S. Chief Information Officer Steven VanRoekel
VanRoekel also is new to the government this year, having been appointed federal CIO in August. VanRoekel will continue the government’s migration to cloud, as highlighted in former CIO Vivek Kundra’s 25-point plan.
