Tom Pyke

Pyke is the CIO of the U.S. Department of Energy.  Prior to joining the Department of Energy, Pyke worked at the U.S. Department of Commerce. He was the CIO there from 2001 to 2005.  Pyke worked at the Department of Commerce for over 30 years in senior management roles and his focus was on information technology. During his time as CIO at the Department of Commerce, he was in charge of major enhancements in IT security, planning, and investments.

Pyke started his career at the National Bureau of Standards. He was the Director of the Center for Computer Systems Engineering and following that he was the Director for the Center of Programming Science and Technology. After that, Pyke joined the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) where he became an Assistant Administrator for Satellite and Information Services. He was in this role for 6 years before he became the NOAA Director for High Performance Computing and Communications. Following that, he was NOAA’s first ever CIO.

Pyke graduated from Carnegie Institute of Technology where he was a Westinghouse Scholar. He later earned a Master’s in Computer Systems from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a Ford Foundation Fellow. Pyke has received several awards in his career such as the Who’s Who in America, the Department of Commerce Gold Medal award, Engineering Science Awards, and 2 Presidential Meritorious Rank Awards.
