gsa greenThe GSA headquarters was constructed in 1918 and is about to go under some major re-construction. The GSA building on 18th and F street is one of a group of buildings that will be going under reconstruction through the Recovery Act funding.

According to a FederalNewsRadio interview, Kevin Kampschrorer, GSA’s Acting Director of the Office of Federal High-Performance Green Buildings, said, “There are different takes on what might be done in the building. We will take it from a pretty poor performer to something that is a showcase.” For example, the building will have solar power installed on the rooftop. Additionally, they are going to use a system that automatically turns off the air conditioning unit when you open up a window.

GSA was given $5.5 billion from the Recovery Act in order to refurbish several federal buildings. Aside from these projects, beginning on January 1st this year, any new lease that is more than 10,000 sq. ft. will be required to meet certain energy efficient guidelines.
