Lynn suggested that space gives the DOD four main advantages, which are: 1) to strike precisely 2) to communicated with certainty 3) to navigate with accuracy and 4) to see the battlefield with clarity. He said, “These advantages make U.S. forces more accurate and agile than ever before. They extend the range of American military power. They have changed the nature of warfare.”

The space environment is changing because it has become more competitive and crowded. Currently there are more than 60 different nations have operate over 1,000 orbiting systems.

Space has become congested with satellites, man-made debris, and it is important that nations work together to avoid communications interference. One of Lynn’s recommendations in yesterday’s address was to build smaller satellites, which will launch later this year.

A new space strategy is imperative. Part of this new strategy includes having norms of behavior with other nations, shared dependence of space systems, and defense for satellites. Lynn says, “We’re approaching a point at which the limitless frontier no longer seems quite so limitless.”
