homeimageThis year, not only is it the 40th birthday of Earth Day, but it is also the 40th anniversary of the Environmental Protection Agency. To celebrate both occasions, the agency is encouraging everyone to get involved in its Go Green! initiative.

With a newly redesigned Earth Day website, EPA is listing five things to do to get involved on April 22:

Participate in the It’s My Environment video project: Make a personal commitment to make environmental protection of your everyday life. Just hold up and read a sign that says “It’s My Environment” while taking a simple action to protect the environment (recycling, turning off lights, tap water), and then pass it off screen. When compiled, the video will look like a human chain around the world.

Pick 5 for the Environment: Commit to follow through on at least five actions from the Pick 5 list, which ranges from using less water to checking your house for radon.

Learn Green Tips: EPA’s Green Tips Podcasts teach how to reduce your carbon footprint, identify and use renewable green electric sources and how to conserve water, among many other things. Sign up to get a daily email with tips on going green.

Teach others about the environment: The agency has compiled lesson plans to help people explain environmental topics to others. The plans include issues relating to air, climate change, water, conservation, eco systems, stewardship, human health and more.

Share your thoughts and ideas on the environment: With Facebook, Greenversations (EPA’s official blog) and Twitter, EPA encourages people to share what they think and what ideas they have about environmental issues.
