The career aviator would succeed Gen. James Conway, who plans to retire in the fall. Gates also recommended Lt. Gen. Joseph Dunford as replacement for Amos’ current role as assistant commandant.

“I came to these leadership decisions after a thorough process that considered several outstanding candidates,” Gates said. “I am convinced that Gen. Amos and Lt. Gen. Dunford are the right team to lead the U.S. Marine Corps at this time, especially as it balances the capabilities needed to support current operations, its unique maritime heritage and its future role defending America.”

Amos commanded a Marine aircraft wing and expeditionary force during Operation Iraqi Freedom, as well as headed the Marines’ Combat Development Command. Dunford currently commands the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force and Marine Corps Forces Central Command.

Gates recommended them to President Barack Obama, and if Amos is nominated and confirmed, he will be the first aviator to lead the Marine Corps.
