A familiar face is returning to FBI’s Washington Field Office, amid a series of a staff changes.
FBI Director Robert S. Mueller announced his pick of James W. McJunkin, who most recently served in the counterterrorism division, to be assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office.
McJunkin, who first became a field agent in 1987 and is a veteran of the field office, worked in the counterterrorism division starting in 2008 before becoming assistant director in January. Previously, McJunkin was the assistant special agent in charge in the Washington Field Office, where he led efforts Joint Terrorism Task Force and counterterrorism investigations. In March 2006, when an attack against the U.S. Consulate in Karachi, Pakistan claimed the life of diplomat, McJunkin led an FBI team in an on-scene investigation of the attack.
“Jim has extensive experience and a record of success in managing counterterrorism investigations and creating successful partnerships,†Mueller said. “His talents are well suited for this new role and he is well positioned to lead one of the FBI’s largest divisions.â€
Meanwhile, McJunkin’s former position will be taken over by Mark F. Giuliano, who most recently served as deputy assistant director of operations branch II in the counterterrorism division. His duties there entailed overseeing all domestic terrorism investigations. He has extensive service in FBI’s counterterrorism operations.
Giuliano also served as an on-scene commander in Afghanistan, leading a team of FBI personnel that supported U.S. Special Forces.
Mueller said Giuliano’s “experience and leadership have prepared him well to lead the FBI’s counterterrorism division during these important times.â€
