As the winter weather has turned federal workers into potential teleworkers today, the Office of Personnel Management is highlighting new numbers that show teleworking is increasing across the federal government and bringing higher job satisfaction with it.

According to an OPM report on teleworking the agency submitted to Congress, the number of federal teleworkers increased by 11,046 from 2008 to 2009.

This means that 5.72 percent of all federal employees teleworked in that time period, and the agency said it believes those numbers are sure to rise, bolstered by the recent passage of the Telework Enhancement Act, signed by President Barack Obama late last year.

The OPM survey also revealed federal employees who teleworked reported being more satisfied with their job (76 percent) than employees who are prevented from doing so (68 percent).

In the coming months, OPM and a host of other federal agencies will work on creating agency-level telework managers and providing guidance for implementing telework policies. This fall, the agency will begin gathering data for its 2010 teleworking report.

  1. Telework can and should increase, as long as security is the top priority. There is actually a FIPS 140-2, Level 1 CERTIFIED product available for web-based collaboration. To read a white paper about why security is among the top priorities to consider when evaluating video conferencing tools – and the hard questions to ask vendors when going though your selection process, go to a great site called GovLoop and read – http://www.govloop.com/profiles/blogs/fips-1402-level-1-secure
