President Barack Obama will name former energy and utility executive John Bryson to be his next commerce secretary, according to various media reports.

Bryson, the former chairman, CEO and president of Edison International, the parent company of Southern California Edison, one of California’s largest suppliers, left the company in July 2008. Bryson has also served as a director of The Boeing Company and as a non-executive chairman of the board of BrightSource Energy, Inc., according to ABC News.

“I am pleased to nominate John Bryson to be our nation’s secretary of commerce, as he understands what it takes for America to succeed in a 21st century global economy,” Obama said in a statement, according to The New York Times blog. “John will be an important part of my economic team, working with the business community, fostering growth and helping open up new markets abroad to promote jobs and opportunities here at home.”

If confirmed by the Senate, Bryson will take over for current Commerce Secretary Gary Locke, who has been nominated by Obama to serve as ambassador to China. That position was vacated when ambassador Jon Huntsman announced plans to step down to mull a presidential bid.
