President Barack Obama will visit CIA headquarters Friday to thank members of the intelligence community for their role in the killing of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden earlier this month.

Jay Carney told reporters aboard Air Force One today of the impending visit, a last-minute schedule change.

Obama will thank the intelligence workforce “for the work they do every day to keep America safe and specifically for their excellent work in tracking down Osama bin Laden,” Carney said, according to The Los Angeles Times.

USA Today also conjectures the visit would likely act as a “tribute” to CIA Director Leon Panetta. Obama has nominated the director to head the Pentagon after Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates retires this summer.

An elite squad of Navy SEALs killed bin Laden May 1 after the painstaking work of intelligence gathering and analysis.

Obama has already personally thanked members of the SEAL team responsible for bin Laden’s demise.
