The Office of Personnel Management announced it has released a draft proposal that would create a new official title for agency IT program managers, a key step in creating a new federal career track for such officials.

“The IT program manager coordinates, communicates and integrates IT projects and program activities,” the proposed definition states. “They ensure that the work effort achieves the outcome as specified within the IT business strategies.”

The new title joins the IT Management 2210 series, which currently includes the IT Project Manager and IT Specialist titles.

The current draft proposal is available for public comment through April 14.

Strengthening the role of IT managers by creating a new job classification has been one of the cornerstones of the 25-point federal IT reform spearheaded by U.S. Chief Information Officer Vivek Kundra.

Back in January, the Office of Management and Budget and OPM sat down with agency leaders and IT experts both in and out of government to hammer out proposals for creating a new federal career track for IT program managers.

Those discussions, although they highlighted a number of uncertainties, were generally rated a success by participants.
