Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) introduced a bill yesterday to streamline the tracking of federal spending by establishing an independent tracking body and a single digital platform for collection.

The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act, or DATA Act, would create a single online storing-house for federal spending data — including data on contracts, loans, grants and agencies’ internal spending — and make it available to the public.

“Americans have the right to know what their government is doing with their money,” Issa said. “Incompatible technologies, inaccurate data, and a lack of common standards impede transparency. The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act will revolutionize the accessibility of government information.”

The legislation would create a “permanent successor” to the Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board, which was established to track spending in the wake of the infusion of federal cash from the 2009 Recovery Act.

The new board would be called the Federal Accountability and Spending Transparency, or FAST, Board.

The new FAST Board would replace and eliminate tracking websites, such as USASpending.gov and Recovery.gov, The Hill reports.

Recovery Accountability and Transparency Board Chairman Earl Devaney will testify Tuesday at an Oversight Committee hearing on federal spending transparency and the solutions the bill proposes.
