The Defense Department announced Tuesday it has appointed Army Brig. Gen. Jeffrey Colt to lead the investigation into the Chinook helicopter crash in Afghanistan that killed 30 U.S. soldiers and 8 Afghan soldiers.

Colt, deputy commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division, will start his duties immediately.

Reuters reports the troops, from a NATO-led coalition, were on a mission to capture a Taliban leader in a valley southwest of Kabul.

President Barack Obama traveled to Dover Air Force Base Tuesday to pay his respects along with other military leaders. He also met privately with family members during his visit to Dover.

“Their loss is a stark reminder of the risks that our men and women in uniform take every single day on behalf of their county,” Obama said Monday. “Day after day, night after night, they carry out missions like this in the face of enemy fire and grave danger.”
