A second non-Blackberry mobile operating system has been certified to access Pentagon computer networks, according to the Defense Information Systems Agency’s recently released guidance for securely connecting devices.

Devices run on Dell’s Android 2.2 operating for both smartphones and tablets will be able to be used, according to a report from Stars & Stripes.

GCN cites John Marinho, director of Dell enterprise mobility solutions, as saying the Dell Streak 5, which uses the Android 2.2 operating system has been certified for use in the Defense Department’s unclassified communications.

However, DISA indicated in its Interim Security Configuration Guide that “the use of this guide and technology supported by this guide is strictly for pilots, tests, and proof of concepts.”

Enterprise-wide Android use to be authorized based on further testing, according to the agency. Although Android is closer to full usage in the Pentagon, Apple’s iOS has yet to be approved.
