The Congressional Budget Office wants the Defense Department to scale back plans for GPS satellites and instead invest upgraded, jam-resistant GPS receivers, according to a report from NextGov.

The CBO says this approach could save $3 billion dollars over the next decade..

It was reported that the CBO wants the Pentagon to focus its funding on GPS III next-generation satellites. It also suggested three options to current plans for the GPS system, which include equipping military GPS receivers with new antennas capable of rejecting signals from jammers and adding an inertial navigation system.

Another option consists of using the Iridium satellite system to enhance GPS. And lastly, combining the first and second options would result in jam resistance of 99.9 percent and would save $1 billion, according to the CBO.

The office says the only problem with the plans are that U.S. troops would have to carry larger and heavier receivers.
