Obama Chooses Senate Aide, Lawyer for FCC Posts

1 min read

President Obama on Monday nominated Jessica Rosenworcel, a Senate aide and Democrat, and Republican lawyer Ajit Pai to serve as members of the Federal Communications Commission.

Rosenworcel is senior communications counsel for the Senate Commerce Committee and has advised Chairman Jay Rockefeller (D-W.Va.) since 2009. She has previous experience at the FCC, serving as legal adviser and senior legal adviser to Commissioner Michael Copps from 2003 to 2007.

Copps’ term expires this year and if confirmed, Rosenworcel would replace him.

Pai is a partner in the litigation department of law firm Jenner & Block LLP and also has previous experience with the FCC. Prior to joining the law firm, Pai worked in the FCC’s Office of the General Counsel, serving as deputy general counsel, associate general counsel and special adviser to the counsel.

Previously, he served as chief counsel to the Senate Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on the constitution, civil rights and property rights and as senior counsel at the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Policy.

When fully staffed, the FCC has five commissioners. The FCC currently has four after Republican Meredith Attwell Baker resigned in May to join Comcast Corp.

Politico reports both Rosenworcel and Pai will face confirmation hearings before the Senate Commerce Committee within the next several weeks.
